Would you pay 50% more?
When it comes to comparing Kawai baby grand pianos, many experts feel the Indonesian version, the GL10, comes up short against the Japanese-built Kawai GM12. Could it have something to do with where they are built?
While both the GM12 and the GL10 sound nice, the GM12 offers depth and richness. Many find its sound more robust and resonant, with more warmth and clarity. Whether you’re playing soft, delicate passages or powerful, dramatic chords, this GM12 responds with a dynamic range and expressiveness.
So the question is, why spend more for a new piano that isn’t built in the same factory as their more expensive pianos?
Where is the value?
In terms of touch and playability, this GM12 once again takes the lead over the successor models we have seen. The keys have a nice balance of weight and responsiveness, providing a natural and fluid playing experience that is quite satisfying. It’s action is smooth and precise compared to what some report as the GL10’s keys feeling somewhat stiff and lacking in sensitivity, making it challenging to achieve the same level of expression. We have heard salespeople say the new models “will loosen up over time,” but that creates two more questions…
First, why wait? This piano costs less. Try it for yourself to see if it feels better.
Second, how do they know the new models will loosen up over time? They’re asking you to assume all the risk. You should never purchase any piano that you don’t love how it plays.
There’s More to Enjoy
Another area where we find the GM12 excels is in its craftsmanship and construction compared to the GL10. Perhaps this was their pinnacle before moving production to Indonesia.

About Prices
We’ve done the comparison shopping for you. In pricing our pianos fairly, we compare our used pianos to the closest new comparable model. We then search our dealer database for the lowest online price for a new model. If an online price is not available, we use a standard 21.6% discount to estimate the lowest new price. In the case of Yamaha, we base this on their average discount when purchased through Costco. We then discount our pianos based on age and condition from the lowest online or estimated new price.
