This Steinway grand piano style is known as “the Contemporary.” It was designed by Walter Dorwin Teague, the father of mid-century modernism and “Dean of Industrial Design” to celebrate Steinway & Sons’ 100th Anniversary. The case design was patented on April 12, 1955.
The Contemporary is notable by an all brass pedal lyre, round legs with brass caps on the base and top, the subtle curve of the arms, and the absence of rolling casters. Also known as Sketch No. 1111, these unique designs were very limited production and only built from 1953 to 1973. It is unknown how many still exist.
This instrument was built in 1968 and features all of the hallmarks of a modern Steinway & Sons piano, including Diaphragmatic Solid Spruce Soundboard, Accelerated Action, and Hexagrip pinblock. The key response is lively and natural, making the instrument incredibly fun to play. The sound is very forthcoming and present, making it a perfect piano for classical, jazz, pop… any music style.
This Contemporary has an amazingly musical sound that compliments its stunning case design. A warm, chocolaty bass is complimented by clear, sparkling highs. The action has been rebuilt with all genuine Steinway & Sons parts, resulting in a piano that is as much fun to play as it is to look at. It truly is a piano that makes a statement before it makes a sound.
