Chansik Youn, a junior at the FGCU Bower School of Music, has won the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Young Artist Piano Competition for the State of Florida.
Youn, from Seoul, South Korea, is a student of Dr. Michael Baron and is the current recipient of the Steinway Piano Society’s scholarship.
This prestigious competition attracts the best undergraduate and graduate piano students in the state. The runner up and two of the three honorable mentions were all masters and doctoral students. The other honorable mention was FGCU senior Elise Sherron.
As winner of the competition, Chansik will compete against the winners of nine other states in South Carolina in January.
The Steinway Society scholarship recipients have had an impressive string of wins in this competition over the ten years of existence of the Bower School of Music. Faith Lanctot, Hyae-jin Hwang, Priscila Navarro, and now Youn are all Steinway Scholarship recipients who have won this competition!
Both Bower School of Music finalists will perform for the Steinway Piano Society this season; Chansik will help open the season on Saturday, December 10th and Elise will be performing on Wednesday, March 22.
