What I saw this week at the Steinway dealer meeting in Chicago amazed me. At a time when so many companies are cutting back on quality, Steinway & Sons unveiled significant improvements in the already fantastic Boston piano.
Considered the best value in its price range and the piano of choice for most colleges, universities, churches and individuals, I found myself sitting at the Performance Edition Boston in disbelief.
They had made a good thing even better.
Bob Dove, President of Steinway – Asia, explained it to me. “Steinway & Sons has always been about defining the piano. The Boston piano is no different.” While Boston pianos have been prized for decades for their warm tone, stability and durability, the improvement in sound was remarkable. Deeper bass was obvious from the first few notes. It reminded me of getting a new pair of glasses after a few years – things looked good before, but now everything was more vivid.
Steinway & Sons further distanced themselves from the ordinary brands by upgrading all of the Boston piano’s hardware. Where other companies use plated-steel, the Boston’s casters, hinges and other hardware are solid brass. Even the color of the plate has been changed – it is now the same as it’s big brother; the Steinway & Sons.
